Privacy Policy

The short version: Catch Pins's developer does not collect personal data.

Effective September 30, 2026

Your fish and lure photos, cutouts, names, catch details and dates remain on your device. Weather sharing is off by default. When a catch has a location, you can choose whether to add its weather.

This policy explains what Catch Pins does with your photos, what it stores on your device, the one request it makes over the network, and how to remove your information.

Photos and camera

You choose which photo to import with Apple's photo picker, or you can take a new photo with the camera. Catch Pins does not request access to your full photo library. The selected image is used only to create fish or lure cutouts and fish-identification suggestions. That processing happens on your device.

Information stored on your device

Catch Pins stores the following in the app's private local storage:

  • the original fish photo you selected or captured;
  • the transparent fish cutout created from that photo;
  • an optional lure or bait photo and its cutout;
  • the fish name you keep or type;
  • optional catch details — weight, length, water temperature, lure or bait name and color, the spot or water body, and whether the fish was released;
  • the date and time of the catch;
  • an optional catch location, taken from the photo's embedded GPS, your current location, or a pin you place by hand; and
  • the historical weather returned for a located catch, saved alongside it.

Your profile name and unit preference are stored in the app's own settings on the device. The developer does not receive your photos or catch records. Optional weather and map requests are described below.

Backups you control

You can export your catch records, photos and saved locations as a backup through Files. You choose where to store it, including any cloud provider you enable. The developer does not receive your backup. Restoring a backup replaces the current gallery after your confirmation.

Location and automatic weather

Location is optional. A catch can be logged without one; it simply won't appear on the catch map. Weather is also optional and remains off unless you choose Add Weather for a catch or enable automatic weather in Settings.

When you choose to add weather, Catch Pins rounds the catch's latitude and longitude to two decimal places and sends that approximate coordinate, along with the catch date and hour, to Open-Meteo's public API to retrieve historical conditions. The response — weather condition, air temperature, wind speed, direction and gusts, barometric pressure, day/night, sunrise and sunset times, and where available a modeled sea-surface temperature — is stored on your device with the catch. Moon phase is calculated on the device from the date and is never requested over the network.

The request contains only that coarsened coordinate and time. It does not receive your photo, the fish name, your catch details or details, account information, or an advertising or app-generated identifier. Like a normal web request, Open-Meteo also receives your IP address. Open-Meteo states that server logs containing IP addresses and geographic coordinates may be retained for up to 90 days. Open-Meteo requires no Catch Pins account and no API key. Its terms and privacy information are available at open-meteo.com/en/terms. Weather data is used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Maps and optional depth contours

The catch map uses Apple Maps to display the visible area. When you enable Depth, Catch Pins sends the visible map bounds to NOAA ENC Direct to GIS to retrieve depth contours. Changing the map area may request another set of contours. These requests do not include fish photos, fish names, catch details, or your saved catch records.

NOAA receives the requested map area and, as with a normal web request, your IP address. Turning Depth off stops depth requests. The overlay is informational only and is not for navigation. Read about the source at NOAA chart data and services.

Retention and deletion

Your saved information remains on your device until you remove the catch or delete Catch Pins. Removing a catch from its catch card deletes that catch's original photo, cutout, lure images, name, details, date, location and stored weather from the app's storage. Deleting the app removes all remaining Catch Pins data from the device.

The developer does not receive your catch data and therefore has no copy to delete or return. Open-Meteo controls retention of its server logs as described above.

On-device models and third parties

Catch Pins includes local software and machine-learning components from Fishial.AI, BioCLIP 2, TreeOfLife-200M, and Microsoft ONNX Runtime. These components run on your device. Catch Pins does not send your photos or results to those projects, to the developer, or to advertisers or analytics providers.

Tracking, advertising, and accounts

Catch Pins has no advertising, no analytics, no cross-app tracking, no account system, and no in-app purchases. The app's privacy manifest declares coarse location, other diagnostic data (the request IP), and other data types (the catch date and hour) for app functionality. The declared data is not linked to you and is not used for tracking.

Children's privacy

Catch Pins does not knowingly collect personal data from children. Catch content stays in the app's private storage on the device where it was created. Optional weather and map requests are described above.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. The same policy text is available inside the app under Settings → Privacy & acknowledgements.
